The 1999 IPO market saw the advent of several new industry sectors. None was more anticipated than the Linux operating system, which was widely hailed as an alternative to Microsoft's Windows NT and Windows CE products. Linux IPOs exploded onto the scene with the August 11 offering by Red Hat. The year finished with the December 9 offering of VA Linux Systems, which set an all-time record for first-day gains at 697.5 percent. All told there were four Linux IPOs in 1999 and they averaged a 426 percent first-day gain. The biggest hit was Red Hat, which has continued to gain and has added 350 percent in after- market trading. A summary of the performance of each of 1999's Linux IPOs is displayed the chart below.
