Clinicians now have updated guidelines to help them manage hypertension in persons with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure unveiled its seventh report (JNC-VII) at the recent American Society of Hypertension meeting in New York City. In persons over the age of 50, systolic blood pressure (SBP) of more than 140 mm Hg is a more important risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) than diastolic BP (DPB). Beginning at a BP of 115/75 mm Hg, the risk of CVD doubles with each increment of 20/10 mm Hg throughout the BP range. Persons who are normotensive at age 55 have a 90% lifetime risk for developing hypertension. The JNC-VII report introduces a new term, prehypertension.
