The Bohler Uddeholm group claims to have a near 30% share of the 850 000 tpy global tool steel market, making it the world's largest producer. To consolidate its hold on the tool and high-speed steels market, the group is expanding its capacity to produce top grades. The group's Bohler Edelstahl facility in Kapfenberg, Austria, is profiled. The Uddeholm, Sweden, and Edelstahl plants make steel for the whole group. Uddeholm makes only tool steel, while Edelstahl makes all grades, amounting to 65% of group output by tonnage. Recent investments--mainly in furnaces and mostly at Edelstahl--have been aimed at the production of special grades and superalloys.
