Manufacturers of turbine blades will have a bigger choice of material suppliers in the coming years. Thyssen Krupp VDM in Geramny, already a major force in corrosion- and heat-resistant nickel-base alloys, is ready to step into a market hitherto reserved for a strictly limited number of players. While VDM's alloys are already used for the non-moving parts of turbines, they have been off-limits for the rotating parts. However, in September 2003, VDM celebrated the inauguration of its new 30-tonne vaccum induction melting (VIM) furnace at its Unna works. This major investment will improve its position in the field of high-purity superalloys for aerospace and electrical engineering.
