• Without exception the group of eleven year olds, faced with the problem of summing the numbers from 1 to 100, turned to the 100 square, and there was a 50% dropout rate at the first sign of failure. All children produced an incorrect total at the first time of asking, but their margin of error was slight enough to suggest errors in calculation rather than in concept of approach.
