• With modern World Wide Web (WWW) browsers, one can search the Internet's databases, transfer files, look up interesting information, and read news without being bothered by the complexities of Unix. Several decisions must be made, key of which are choices of software, access methods, and Internet access providers. If a dial-up modem and Windows application such as Mosaic or Netscape is going to be used, the first important decision is about access method. Until recently, a special SLIP or PPP account with an Internet provider was needed. Now there is another option - software that lets SLIP run on a standard Unix shell account. Having a shell account means one can dial up and remote control a host computer on the Internet using a common communications program. When using a shell account, a PC is not directly connected to the Internet. Access to the network is through what is known as a shell. Pseudo-SLIP is the new name of the game.
