According to recent surveys, the social and religious landscape of American Jewry is undergoing a remarkable demographic transformation. In New York City, 40 percent of the Jewish population claims to be either Orthodox or ultra-Orthodox, and nationally, 27 percent of Jews younger than 18 reside in households where families observe ritually precise, "torah-true" Judaism, minutely organized around strict adherence to halachic law -- keeping the Sabbath and following the dietary rules prescribed by kashruth (rabbinically sanctioned kosher foods), among many other faith practices. Lynn Davidman's theoretically sophisticated if somewhat repetitive new book, Becoming Un-Orthodox: Stories of Ex-Hasidic Jews, deepens our understanding of the psychological and emotional costs for the ex-observant, still struggling with their turn from inherited faith and practice.
