  • In his fiction, [David Mitchell] -- whose novels include Ghostwritten, Number 9 Dream and Cloud Atlas -- has dazzled critics and an international readership with his ability to change genre, style, point of view, time and far-flung locale (including Japan, where the British author lived while writing his first two books) from one chapter to the next. Cloud Atlas, for instance, contains six seemingly unrelated narratives that eventually interlock: They include a journal of a traveller in the South Pacific of the 19th century; an epistolary narrative about a bisexual British composer in the 1930s; and the story of a clone in 22nd-century Korea. Mitchell's talent as a ventriloquist, so amply praised in his previous novels, is applied more subtly here. His ear for dialect and dialogue is superb, and the novel's most memorable chapters -- a dinner with [Jason Taylor]'s pompous uncle; Jason's poetry lessons from an eccentric Belgian aristocrat (a character from Cloud Atlas) -- feature long passages of conversation.
