  • In recognition of the Bloomsday centenary, Dublin's main cultural institutions have banded together to put on a five-month festival called ReJoyce Dublin 2004, which kicks off on April 1. Fully cognizant of the fact that most people who pick up Ulysses call it a day somewhere around page three, ReJoyce's organizers are planning a populist event that can be enjoyed as much by aficionados who have memorized Molly Bloom's 60-page soliloquy as neophytes to the novel who have maybe skimmed the racy bits. A highlight of ReJoyce is the National Library of Ireland's exhibition of several of the notebooks in which [James Joyce] wrote Ulysses. The manuscripts, which were acquired by the library in 2001 to much international attention, are a window into the artist's mind as well as striking pieces of visual art. As he edited, Joyce struck out lines and made revisions in pencil, ink and green, red and blue crayons. When they go on display publicly for the first time on June 15, these manuscripts will likely rival the Book of Kells as the city's most popular attraction for bibliophiles. The ornate bible was hand-written by monks in AD 800, and is on display at Trinity College in Dublin. Color Photo: J.
