Durrell profiles US Army Master Sgt Martin J. Cervantez. Cervantez enlisted in the Army immediately after high school in Jul 1986. An early childhood fascination with making art influenced his assignment as an illustrator, working on leaflets and pamphlets. Later his post would take him into combat situations with a camera rather than a gun. As the Army's artist in residence he works part of the time in a studio at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and part of the time in the field with soldiers on active duty. Assignments have included leading a combat camera team in Kosovo and a tour in Iraq as well as two in Afghanistan.
