With 1 figure and 4 tables ABSTRACT: Understanding the genetic control of heading date and yield traits has significant implications for rice improvement. A recombinant inbred population of the indica rice cross ‘Zhong 156'/‘Gumei 2' was grown with sowing date corresponding to the early, mid and late cropping in the Southern China rice growing region, respectively. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for heading date and six yield traits were determined with a linkage map consisting of 198 markers and spanning 1630.2 cM. Totally 42 QTLs were detected, of which 13 showed significant additive effects and additive‐by‐environment interaction effects, 28 showed significant additive effects only, and one displayed a significant effect in one trial only. QTLs showing major effects on yield traits were identified in the pericentromeric regions of chromosomes 3 and 7, clustering with QTLs for heading date in coupling phase. Three more QTL clusters were detected, including two for yield traits and one for yield traits and heading date. In the utilization of potentially valuable QTLs for yield traits, their relationships with QTLs for heading date should be carefully considered.
