  • Within a 1969 issue of Captain America appeared a letter that described the Marvel Comics hero as a warmonger and criticized the editors for giving the character speech consistent with a "defender of the Establishment". Four issues later, three of the four published letters in Captain America #114 attacked the first letter. The editors took the opportunity to side with the outraged responders, and the argument might have died then and there. But it didn't. Over the next six years, the "Let's Rap With Cap" letters column contained more than 60 letters about the burgeoning "patriotism controversy." Here, Stevens uses the written correspondence of readers of Captain America to capture the mood of a period of American history in which the citizenry's views of the government and American icons were unusually fragmented and diverse. The letters pose strong arguments about the definition of American patriotism, and as each letter writer argued his or her position, the comic book provided a structure and forum to discuss their views of American identity and politics during a time when such forums were not readily available.
