• This paper, departing from a new definition of French schwa, first discusses existing analyses of schwa/zero alternations in word and phrase initial syllables. These are then confronted with the corpus Phonologie du Francais Contemporain (PFC), particularly with the points d'enquete Brecey, Brunoy, Dijon, Paris Centre and Treize-Vents. Among the various factors mentioned in earlier analyses, it is not the morphological status but rather the possibility of realizing the surrounding consonants that determines deletion of mute e. On the other hand, the effect of this constraint is hard to perceive because of the free variation that influences schwa in this position. Adapted from the source document
