• Despite the general consensus on the autonomy of schwa, we discuss, in light of three types of data, a more minimalist analysis with schwa as a variant of /oe/. Judgment data reveal distributional tendencies in particular with regard to morphological structure, further strengthened by production data. However, based on a study of child-directed speech -- with a slightly different rate of schwa absence -- we propose that the distribution to which the child is exposed is not identical to the one in the adult target language, which could have implications for the categorisation of schwa.
