According to Saussure's terminology, with the term 'phonetics' one means not only the study of sound articulation (which he defines as Lautphysiologie or Sprachphysiologie), but also the diachronic study of sounds. The phonetic investigations that Saussure carried out from his Memoire to the courses in general linguistics show that, while dealing with central themes within the field of historical and comparative linguistics, he is already formulating some theoretical considerations that we find later in the CLG.
