  • Musician Supriono Hadi Prasetya described the relationship between the drummer and the dancer as one partnership, explaining that they can be called as husband and wife. Supriono's use of this metaphor captures the complexity of the relationship between the drummer and the dancer, evoking dynamics of power and constructions of gender in a contemporary Javanese context. Here, Sunardi analyzes a video session in 2006 documenting an east Javanese dance that associated with the regency of Malang. She reveals the ways in which husband-wife metaphor functioned in a real-life situation. Complex cultural contradictions underlie the husband-wife metaphor. On the one hand, the metaphor expresses the complementary nature of male and female elements characteristic of some Javanese worldviews, the powerful position that many women hold within the family, and the give-and-take relationship between the dancer and the drummer.
