• Fischer talks about Jewish/non-Jewish relations in the modern German (and Austrian) context. For scholars of Jewish/non-Jewish relations in the modern German (and Austrian) context these are truly exciting times. Until quite recently, the body of scholarship of genuine substance focusing on this topic could be quite easily surveyed. Each new monograph in the field was long awaited and treated as though it could reasonably be expected to resolve once and for all the perennial controversy between those who assume Jewish/non-Jewish relations in modem Germany and Austria, on balance, to have been either predominantly productive or consistently dysfunctional-between those, in other words, whom for brevity's sake people might call "optimists" and "pessimists."
