The variety & diversity of meanings acquired by Spanish basta 'enough, that will do, stop now' in Chavacano (Chabacano), a Spanish-based creole of Zamboanga City, the Philippines, are described. The history of this lexeme in the Spanish of the Philippines is traced to the 18th century, quoting excerpts from a letter written in 1774, where its aberrant use is found to document the first of the new & strange meanings of basta in Chavacano. A survey of this creole's grammars & dictionaries is conducted to inventory, exemplify, & interpret the various usages & meanings peculiar to Chavacano & absent in Peninsular & American Spanish varieties; comparisons are made, however, with attestations in Cebuano, Ilongot, & Tagalog. Noting that while some of the new meanings are easily derivable & predictable from the semantics of the Spanish verb bastar 'suffice, to be enough,' the adversative & conative connotations & emphatic, intensifying, expressive, & metadiscursive uses are difficult to explain. The functioning of basta as a connective particle linking conditional, causal, temporal, & concessive clauses is examined. The semantic evolution of basta in Chavacano is interpreted in terms of the various stages of grammaticalization it underwent from its Peninsular Spanish verbal origins until the present day forms of interjection, adverbs, connective, & emphatic particle in the Philippines creole.
