  • In an analysis of the semantic relationship of the future & conditional paradigms in French, Italian, Spanish, & Portuguese, focus is on shared functions. In addition to temporal uses as a deictic future & a past future, respectively, the future & conditional have modal uses of the conjectural-inferential & reportive types with significant distributional differences across the four languages under study: a predominance of the temporal factor in Spanish & the modal factor in French is contrasted with near equilibrium of the two factors in Portuguese & an absence of correlation between the tenses in Italian. To systematize these data, a semantic framework is constructed by proposing two binary semantic features: a temporal feature [PAST] & an epistemic modal feature [DUBITATIVE]; inferential & reportive functions of the future & conditional in French, Spanish, & Portuguese are described by a combination of the two features with cross-linguistic variations in polarity value. 72 References.
