• South Korean students (N = 5, aged 22-26) enrolled in a Portuguese as a second language course performed tasks in the target language & their communicative strategies were analyzed. The notions "strategy" & "interlanguage" are defined, & literature on second language learners' communicative strategies is surveyed. Elaine Tarone's typology (1977) is applied; approximation, language change, call for help, & nonverbal signs use are distinguished as the four principal communicative strategies utilized by the Ss.
