This article discusses the process of meaning construction in reading/writing, based on data collected in verbal reports. These data come from Spanish-speakers, learners of Portuguese as a second language (PE-L2). The results indicate that the typological proximity between the two languages is a facilitating factor for the reason that the speakers already master a "threshold level" of the target language, but this proximity makes them insert words from their mother tongue, besides not being enough to produce texts in the target language with a communicative quality. 2 Tables, 2 Appendixes, 33 References.
