Beschreibungen/Notizen
An informant speaking the eastern Neo-Aramaic dialect of Bar(schwa)tle, a village near Mosul, Iraq, is presented, & the occurrence of velarized r & retroflexive r in this variety is investigated. Evidence is produced showing that these sounds are not allophones of r but independent phonemes. An attempt is made to explain the phonetic & articulatory conditions triggering the occurrence of the two sounds. It is noted that r is preserved after dental & palatal consonants, but it is usually velarized when a labial comes before or after it in roots with frontal consonants. However, in some instances, it shifts to r instead of r. The old r shifts to the reflexive r after glottal, uvular, & velar consonants. A similar shift occurs after the vowels u & o. The dating of the sound shift from r to either r or r must be placed in the earlier diachronic stages of the dialect's history. Z. Dubiel
