Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • This book discusses various aspects of cognitive grammar, particularly involving morphology & the Norwegian language, & many of the analyses aim to provide a cognitive account using neural networks &/or PDPs to explain the motivation for morphological processes, rather than using a more traditional, structuralist approach based on "building blocks." The papers presented in this collection are the result of a conference entitled "The Verb in Cognitive Grammar: Morphological, Semantic, and Syntactic Aspects," that took place in June 1998 in Gran, Norway, at which Ronald W. Langacker & Richard A. Hudson (both cognitive linguists) were the keynote speakers. Examples from Russian (Enger & Nesset) & many African languages (Fagerli) are used to promote the concept of language as a network, & experimental data, particularly involving Norwegian past tense acquisition & SLI, are provided by Simonsen & Bjerkan, respectively. Besides past tense, other foci of the articles in this edition include verb inflection & formation, reflexive/middle/passive systems, topicalization, & transitivity. 1 Bibliography. C. Croom
