• A chronology of aspirated stop development from Proto-Indo-European to Greek, proposed by Hamp (2003) in the context of a derivation of Ancient Greek ekhetle 'plough handle' from Proto-Indo-European *sg'hedhla, is recapitulated in light of postclassical changes & morphophonemic alternations involving the voiceless fricatives that reflect earlier aspirated stops. Six stages are discriminated: (1) Proto-Indo-European *s becomes Helleno-Armenian *h in a wide range of environments; (2) aspirates devoice in Greek, followed by (3) suffix dissimilation & (4) fronting of medial h; (5) Grassmann's law operates; & (6) intervocalic -h- is lost in post-Mycenean Greek. 11 References.
