  • It is argued that the self is constructed in the interstices between the many public languages & codes in which it is socialized & the private language one adopts to interpret those languages. The relationship between these public & private languages is described as a continuum on which the self is constructed. Further, it is suggested that to lead an ethical life in modern society means to acquire a second education, an ability to practice cultural psychoanalysis, through which one may better interpret & deconstruct the public languages that constitute self. This ability is discussed as existing in a middle ground between the public & private aspects, where one not only confronts the self, but the other, who partially constructs the self as well. D. M. Smith
