• A corpus of 20 Florentine texts from the second half of the 13th century is analyzed to investigate sequence of tense & mood in the protasis & apodosis of Old Italian conditional sentences. Six patterns are described: (1) indicative in both clauses; (2) imperfect subjunctive in the protasis & simple conditional in the apodosis; (3) the so-called mixed realis sequence combining (1) & (2); (4) pluperfect subjunctive in the protasis & compound conditional in the apodosis; (5) other subjunctive/conditional combinations with irrealis meaning; & (6) the mixed irrealis sequence, in which a pluperfect subjunctive in the protasis combines with an imperfect indicative in the apodosis. The semantic value of selections among (1-6) is argued to correspond entirely to that of Modern Italian, opposing the possible truth vs possible falsehood of the propositional content. 63 References.
