• An examination of stereotypical attitudes toward standard vs nonstandard language varieties & the corresponding social perceptions of speakers of these varieties. Danish informants (N = 212, mean age 23:6) from differing social classes, linguistic background, gender, age, & place of residence listened to seven voices representing various social groups & varieties of Danish (eg, regional varieties, high & low Copenhagen speech, Standard Danish). Ss were asked to rate the quality of language & the speakers' competence, status, & social attractiveness. Results indicated that Danish society possesses a hierarchical social structure similar to that found in British & American studies. 22 References. Adapted from the source document
