Hagen's (no date provided) etymology of dialectal Dutch haander 'cock' is re-examined, considering proposals in J. de Vries's Nederlands etymologisch woordenboek ([Dutch Etymological Dictionary] no date provided) & implications of the Germanic sound shift law for Akkadian borrowings. G. S. Overdiep's (1940) study of verbs in -sen in northeastern Dutch occasions a discussion of the depreciative function of the ending -s attached to Dutch designations of females & the attestations of verbs in -sen in Old Saxon, Frisian, English, & High German as well as Dutch dialects outside the northeastern group. The meaning of the -s in such verbs & their relationship to nouns with s-stems are investigated. Two Proto-Indo-European roots are considered as candidates for etymons of dialectal Dutch vrips 'wasp'. 29 References. Z. Dubiel
