  • A review of Nina Gronnum's Fonetik og Fonologi, Almen og Dansk ([Phonetics and Phonology, General and Danish] Copenhagen: Akademisk Forlag, 1998) relates the organization of the contents of this work to its intended function as a textbook for an introductory course in general & Danish phonetics & phonology. Gronnum's treatment of Danish segmental phonology is assessed from the perspective of an idiolectal analysis of front unrounded vowels, questioning the utility of the classical concept of the phoneme for an account of Danish as a complex network of intergenerational, intraidiolectal, regional, & stylistic variation that permits successful communication. Gronnum's strong emphasis on phonetic segments is judged well-founded for an introductory text, although it needs to be balanced in further reading by stress on the continuous nature of speech; Gronnum's didactic decision to exclude acoustic & auditory phonetics is challenged, however, as the physical & physiological bases of articulatory, acoustic, & auditory phonetics are equally difficult for students to grasp & intuitive, impressionistic observations are available for both articulations & speech sounds. 7 References.
