• 90 undergraduates learned 10 serial lists of 10 nouns under 1 of 5 conditions: (a) generating their own meaningful narratives to connect the to-be-remembered words; (b) reading E-provided stories which linked the same words and then selecting those words on the basis of their semantic, acoustic, or visual characteristics; or (c) studying the lists under normal serial-recall instructions. Recall of each list immediately after it was studied was nearly perfect for all groups. However, a delayed cued recall test showed significant differences in the amount of long-term recall, which were consistent with the degree of meaningful processing induced by the various tasks.
