  • Finger-spelling is a technique to help children learn to spell short-vowel words, sound by sound, using their fingers as aids. It is analogous to counting on one's fingers & has the same two advantages: it is very concrete, & children always have their fingers with them. Although children are taught to spell by sound, not by letter name, they raise one finger for every letter they will write, not for very sound they hear. Kinesthetic feedback from finger-spelling eliminates confusion in the sequencing of sounds & letters, & enables students to (1) separate the sounds they hear in words, (2) determine the number of sounds, & (3) write the corresponding letters in correct order. Children who finger-spell appear to improve significantly in auditory sequencing, auditory discrimination, & memory for sounds. Finger-spelling has been used with children in the first three grades & for remedial purposes. No research has been conducted to compare the effectiveness of finger-spelling with other spelling methods. 3 Figures. AA
