Theoretical goals of sociolinguistic research in anthropology are discussed, focusing on the period 1960-1980. The common goal of descriptive adequacy for speech behavior is ascribed to several speech component & processual models developed during this time; particular attention is given to Haver C. Currie's early studies (eg, Linguistic Atlas of the United States and Canada, 1978) & to Roman Jakobson's speech event model. The emergence of ethnographic semantics (Gumperz, John & Hymes, Dell, The Ethnography of Communication, New York: Holt, Rinehart, & Winston, 1972) is also reviewed, recommending greater focus on social interaction as a means to improved ethnographic methods.
