Presented is an overview of the works of A. Schmidt, a former winner of the Goethe Prize little known outside of Germany. His works over the past thirty years display a progression from complexity to extremely challenging, extravagant subjectivism. Refusing to accept metaphysical consolations & justifications of any sort, he asks about the nature & possibilities of an art without metaphysical premise. His work serves as a vehicle for his literary theory, both in conflict with & gratitude to literary tradition. Special attention is given to his analyses of E. A. Poe & J. Joyce. His work must be judged on his conviction that modern experience no longer allows obligatory standards. His greatest contribution is to expand the verbal & nonverbal expressiveness of a language no longer intact. M. Meeks
