• Argumentations are a specific kind of complex verbal action: their constitutive task is the development of an argument, ie, a set of propositions interconnected in a "logical" way; this task may be solved by an individual or a group, & is called the logic of argumentation. Classical methods of deductive & inductive reasoning were not formally designed, & are thus not very apt to describe the logic of people actually reasoning. Presented is a more flexible method of analyzing the logic of both argumentation & argument; classical logic might be seen as a special case of this approach. It is exemplified in the analysis of an authentic argumentation of three people about an ethical problem. Finally, some objections against & some extensions of this method are discussed. 8 Figures.
