This chapter reviews some of the work on the metabolism of indoleamines and catecholamines in relation to mental illness. It includes a presentation of biochemical patterns observed in syndromes of inborn errors of metabolism. In addition, investigations of tryptophan and catecholamine metabolism in relation to schizophrenia and various other neurological and psychiatric disorders are discussed. Concerning indoleamines, it is of interest that disorders in tryptophan metabolism, including the indole as well as the kynurenine pathway, are observed in various clinical conditions associated with mental symptoms, that is, in syndromes of inborn errors of metabolism, in nutritional disorders, during drug treatments, and alcoholism, as well as in schizophrenic patients. Lesions of tryptophan metabolism that occur in the nutritional disorder pellagra appear to be primarily due to a nutritional deficiency of tryptophan and various vitamins. Similarly, derangements of trytophan metabolism as well as mental symptoms can be induced by pharmacologically active agents such as isoniazid, and both may disappear after cessation of the treatment.
