• An electron microscopic study of ultra-thin sections of the bacteriophage T2 showed that DNA inside the phage head is likely to be packed in an ellipsoid with a small central cavity. Treatment of the phage adsorbed on a carbon film from alkaline medium with acid solutions of phosphotungstic acid resulted in lengthwise rupture of the phage head envelope and release into the medium of condensed DNA, which formed ring-shaped structures. These structures decondensed gradually, giving fibres with a diameter ranging from 110 to 150 . The secondary and tertiary structures of DNA inside the phage particles are discussed.
