• 1. Cul-de-sac aspiration to obtain a cytologic specimen was performed in 1,123 asymptomatic women all of whom were over the age of 34 years.2. The procedure was easily performed, safe, accepted by women, and the slides were processed by the same methods as for a cervical cytosmear.3. Fifty-two per cent of all women and 72 per cent of postmenopausal women had representative cytologic specimens of peritoneal fluid obtained from the cul-de-sac.
