This survey is an attempt to evaluate the extent of ‘new conservatism’ among Austrian youth today. It consists of a representative study in which 19-year-old young men who were already working were compared with students and unemployed youths of the same age. Conservatism was measured according to a newly developed scale; political views according to a left/right self-classification and by party preferences. In addition, opinions were also measured concerning important institutions of the social state and of democracy. The main result confirms access to education as being centrally significant. Compared with their working peers, better educated young people show a much lower tendency to hold conservative values. The important intervening variable proves to be aggression control, which is to be understood as approval of universalistic norms in the settlement of conflicts as distinct from particularistic (i.e. aggressive) responses. It appears that acceptance of universalistic norms is closely connected with endorsement of democratic institutions.
