Examines social benefits received by various ethnic groups in the Federal Republic of Germany, using data from the 1995 German Socioeconomic Panel Study (N = almost 5,000 households); native Germans & residents of 10+ years were distinguished from short-term immigrants, subdivided by ethnic origin. A first descriptive analysis shows that short-term immigrants, especially refugees/asylum seekers, including ethnic Germans from former Eastern European countries, rely most heavily on social assistance, followed by long-term immigrants & native Germans. Multivariate analysis reveals that differences in need between long-term residents & native Germans are determined mainly by social structures that favor natives (eg, property income, higher wages); immigrants' social assistance needs decrease significantly after 5 years. It is concluded that social benefits are an effective instrument for integrating immigrants into German society. 4 Tables, 1 Figure, 25 References. Adapted from the source document.
