- By focusing on routine services within a country, either strategy would gain access for children at most need, and would help to minimise real and perceived problems associated with control programmes for single-diseases.13,14 Additional benefits would be strengthened efforts to eradicate poliomyelitis by providing higher routine coverage of poliovirus vaccine with trivalent oral poliovirus vaccine or inactivated poliovirus vaccine, which in turn would strengthen the poliomyelitis eradication endgame, which itself includes minimising the risk of circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses.15 Finally, either strategy would enhance prevention of all vaccine-preventable diseases, greatly increasing the public health benefit of measles eradication.
