  • Optimal characterization of the immunomodulatory activity of retinoids requires in vivo assays. However, the bioavailability and absorption characteristics of individual retinoids can differ considerably. In addition, the route of administration can also influence the effects seen. Thus, monitoring of retinoid blood levels is recommended as an index of comparisons between experiments. This chapter emphasizes the immunomodulatory effects of retinoids suspended in a corn oil vehicle and administered intraperitoneally. Characterizing the activity of a retinoid in three animal model systems permits an interpretation of the relative capacity of the compound of interest to affect both cellular and humoral immune responses. The compounds with activity can then be analyzed in animal models of immune disease states. The discovery of compounds that selectively inhibit either cellular or humoral immune responses will also aid in the determination of which effector functions contribute to the various diseases of immune dysfunction.
