• Dick Davidson, president of the American Hospital Association since 1991, has witnessed--and advocated--a revolution among the members. Hospitals have become much more than providers of acute care. Many of them now strive to manage a continuum of coordinated services to their communities. Their next big step is learning to manage risk for Medicare patients by becoming provider sponsored organizations. None of this is made easier, Davidson believes, by the public's sagging confidence in hospitals. In fact, he sees regaining that trust and respect as health care's top priority.
