Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a multifocal disease involving skin, visceral organs and lymph nodes. Histologically, proliferating spindle-shaped cells, which are considered to be the tumour cells of these lesions, a prominent vasculature and numerous monocytes are characteristic of KS lesions. Accumulating evidence has indicated that human herpesvirus (HHV)-8 is involved in the initiation or the progression of KS in patients with and without HIV infection. The genome of HHV-8 encodes two open reading frames (ORF K4 and K6) with sequence similarity to the CC-chemokine macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1 alpha . The two encoded proteins have been termed v-MIP-I (ORF K6) and v-MIP-II (ORF K4). Interestingly, it has been shown that both v-MIP-I and v-MIP-II are angiogenic in the chorioallantoic assay. On the basis of this finding, a possible pathogenic role for both factors in KS has been suggested. Nevertheless, the expression of these factors in KS tissue sections has not been previously investigated.
