• We used the umbilical site for temporary colostomy or ileostomy in 47 infants and children. Complications were frequent but were not specifically related to the site of the ostomy. The umbilical site is a convenient site for placement of applicances, and ultimately, after closure, the scar resembles a normal umbilicus and is cosmetically superior to that of an ostomy placed elsewhere.
