Seventy-two sophomore dental students instrumented curved canals in acrylic blocks. The students were given specific instructions and were to use balanced forces to instrument the blocks. One-half of the blocks were instrumented using a modified tipped “K”-type file while the other half was instrumented with an unmodified K-type file from the same manufacturer. The preparations were rated in two ways. First, the degree of transportation was determined by measurements of tracings of the canals and, second, a subjective rating was done on the degree of instrumentation that occurred on the inner curvature of the apical preparation. A significant difference in the preparations was evident with the modified instruments exerting less transportation and more inner curvature preparation. The modified files maintained the original canal curvature better and more frequently than did the unmodified files.
