  • With increases in both child abuse & teenage pregnancies in the last decade, the association between abuse history & teenage pregnancy was investigated by linking findings from literature on the two topics. A link among child abuse history, dissociation (elevated schizophrenia scores), & teenage pregnancy, suggested by E. Becker-Lausen (1991), may be present for both teen mothers & fathers. A model is presented for future testing predicting that child abuse leads to dissociation, which: (1) mediates the outcome of teen pregnancy; (2) mediates the risk of early pregnancy by rejection of conventional norms; (3) results in lower self-esteem, leading to depression & teen pregnancy independently; & (4) increases vigilance & depressive symptomatology. Further dialogue between researchers in the two fields is advocated. 46 References. Adapted from the source document.
