• White patches (leukoplakia) of the oral cavity have a well-documented potential to develop into squamous-cell carcinoma, 1 – 3 and when this occurs, the odds of surviving more than five years are poor. 4 , 5 Accurate prognosis is important in patients with oral leukoplakia, because with avoidance of the use of tobacco and alcohol and appropriate treatment, malignant disease can be averted. 6 , 7 Between 5 and 15 percent of oral white patches are classified histologically as dysplasia. 8 , 9 Of these, 15 to 20 percent develop into carcinoma. 10 Since histologic assessment of these dysplastic lesions is of limited prognostic value, 11 therapeutic intervention is considered . . .
