  • In New Orleans, second line parades typically run concurrent with main line parades, although they take separate routes and incorporate those who would usually remain on the sidelines. These neighborhood-based parades provide an opportunity for memorialization and the cultivation of critical skills for leadership and community organization. In this essay, I argue that Disney's The Princess and the Frog plays the role of a "second line" in Disney's genre of "princess" films. While Disney attempts to produce Princess Tiana as empowered, grounded, and down-to-earth, the colorful film still relies heavily on reproductions of racial ideologies that sanitize the everyday lives of African-Americans and normalize whiteness.
