- A simple and rapid method is described for the quantitation of elastin in lung tissues. This procedure involves the determination of the desmosine crosslinks in both the total connective tissue and isolated elastin. The results are expressed as percentage elastin of the total protein in the connective tissue. This method is more accurate than previously described assays, since it takes into account possible variations of the desmosines in elastin from one lung specimen to another, and unlike the older gravimetric procedures it is not affected by losses during isolation.
