The circumsporozoite (CS) protein, a species-specific sporozoite surface protein and a vaccine candidate antigen, has been characterized from malaria parasites that naturally cause infections in humans, monkeys and chimpanzees. Plasmodium simium is a nonhuman malaria parasite both morphologically and biologically similar to the human malaria parasite Plasmodium vivax. . simium malaria parasites naturally infect black howler monkeys (Alouatta fusca ) and woolly spider monkeys (Brachyteles arachnoides ) in a small area of Brazil. Because of the discrepancy of the infectivity of P. simium sporozoites and of the morphologic and biologic similarities between P. simium and P. vivax , we studied the CS protein of P. simium parasites as an avenue to understand the relationships between these two malaria parasites.
